How’s it going?
Not bad. Yourself?
Good, I just got my Halloween costume.
Really? What are you going as?
That’s cool.
Yup. Do you have a costume?
No, not yet.
Well, do you have any ideas of what you want to go as?
A couple, but I’m not sure if I want to go as something scary or something funny.
That’s a tough choice. What are your ideas?
I was thinking of going as a werewolf.
That could be pretty scary. What’s your funny idea?
My funny idea was going as Mario and having a friend go as Luigi.
Well, those both sound pretty good.
Yeah, I’ll have to think more about it.
Well, don’t put it off too long. Halloween is only a few days away.
I know, but I’m just not as into it as I was when I was a kid.
Of course you aren’t. We don’t get free candy anymore.
Yeah, that was the best part of Halloween.
Well, I hope you decide on something great.
Thanks. I’ll see you at the party, right?
Yup. I’ll see you then. Bye
Ok, bye.

Hi there.
Hi, it’s good to see you.
Likewise. What’s new?
Nothing very exciting. What’s new with you?
Well, I’m trying to become a standup comedian.
That’s awesome!
Yeah, I’m excited about it.
So have you performed anywhere yet?
Yeah, I just did my first show at the Comedy Shack.
How did it go?
It went alright.
The first time must be hard.
Yeah, I was pretty nervous. Next time will be better.
So who are your comedy influences?
Ah, there are so many.
Well, name a few that most influenced you.
All of the comedy greats like Pryor, Carlin, Kaufman, and so on.
What about recent comedians who you would like to be compared to?
Some new comedians I think are really funny are Anthony Jeselnik and Rob Delaney.
I’ve never heard of them. It must be tough because humor is so subjective.
Yeah, seriously. Some of my favorite jokes didn’t get many laughs.
Well don’t let it discourage you. I’ve always said you were funny.
Thanks. Listen, I gotta go.
Alright. Let me know next time you’re performing.
I absolutely will. Bye!
See ya!

Hi, how are you?
I’m good, how are you?
Good, thanks.
What can I help you with?
Well, I’m looking for something fashionable to buy my daughter.
Alright, how old is she?
She’s fifteen.
Girls that age are usually on top of fashion.
Yes, she’s very fashionable; unfortunately, I’m not.
Well, you came to the right store.
Only because my daughter recommended it.
Don’t worry, I’m here to help you out.
Good. I’m looking for summer clothing for her.
Well, the young woman’s department is right over there.
Wow, there’s a lot.
Yeah, we have everything your daughter could want.
Fashion was a lot simpler when I was fifteen. What do you recommend?
We just got some new cute tops in that she would probably love.
Great! Do you have any swimsuits?
Yes we do. One-piece or two-piece?
She likes wearing a two-piece.
Ok, you can go talk to Julie in the young woman’s department.
Alright, great. Thanks for your help.
No problem. Have a nice day.
You too.

Hey man
Hey! Good to see you.
How have you been?
Not bad, you?
Hot. Too hot. Can you believe this summer we’re having?
Tell me about it. I’ve been working as a roofer this summer.
Ouch. That must be brutal in this heat.
It is. Somehow I haven’t fainted yet while on a roof.
Well, staying alive in the heat is all about staying hydrated.
I know. I drink at least three Gatorades a day.
Dude, I don’t know if that’s good for you.
Why wouldn’t it be?
Gatorade has a lot of sugar. In this heat your best bet is just water.
But I need my electrolytes to keep me going.
I don’t know, people have done fine with just water for thousands of years.
Yeah but have those people ever had to roof a house in a hundred degree weather?
Yeah. Well, some of them must have.
Well, too much sugar or not, Gatorade gets me through the hottest days.
More power to you, man. I get to work in air conditioning, so I shouldn’t really complain.
Lucky. What are you doing?
Just a boring office job, but it keeps me out of the sun so I’m happy.
You’re not a real “summer guy” are you?
Nope. I’m just waiting for fall to get here so I can feel a cool breeze on my face.
Yeah, that will be nice.
Until then, I’m beating the heat with plenty of water and AC.
Well, enjoy your temperature-controlled work environment.
And you enjoy the sun. I gotta run but I’m sure I’ll talk to you later.
Alright. It was good running into you. Catch you later.

Volunteer Work

Hi. How are you?
Fine. Yourself?
I’m doing well. What can I help you with?
I’m looking to volunteer here.
Oh good! We can always use more volunteers.
How do I sign up?
Well, it depends. When do you want to start?
I’m looking to start as soon as possible.
Ok, great. Where do you want to volunteer?
I’m not really sure. What are my options?
You can either work in the garden or in the food pantry.
Hmm… I don’t have any experience doing either.
That’s alright. You don’t need any.
Ok, well where do you need the most help?
Good question. Probably in the garden.
What would I have to do?
Well, we’ve planted about half of the crops, but the rest still need to be planted.
Will someone be able to show me how to do that?
Of course. You will also be watering and weeding.
That’s something I know how to do.
Will those be all of my responsibilities?
For the most part, but we can always use volunteers elsewhere, too.
That sounds great. I’ll tell some of my friends. Well, thanks for your time
Thank you. I look forward to working with you.
I look forward to working here.
