Retirement

Does your grandfather still work for the railroad company?
No, he retired last year.
I thought you had to be a certain age before you could retire.
He would have had to wait until he was 67, but he hurt his back.
And now he cannot physically do his job anymore?
Exactly, so his company allowed him to have early retirement.
Will he still be able to receive his pension?
Yes, because his age does qualify him for early retirement.
What about Social Security benefits?
No, he will have to wait until he is 67 to receive them.
How long did he work for the railroad company?
He was there for over thirty years.
Will that affect how much of a pension he will receive?
Yes, because he worked for over thirty years, he will receive three quarters of his usual pay.
What if he had only worked there for twenty years?
Then they would have only given him half of his pay for pension.
What will he do now that he is retired?
He has always wanted to travel around the country with my grandmother.
Will he be healthy enough to do that with his back?
Yes, but not for very long.
Will he move into a retirement home when they return?
No, he can still take care of himself and does not need a retirement home.
What else will he do with all his extra time now?
When he returns he plans to start a hobby.
The perfect hobby for him would be to build toy trains!

Online Banking

Would you like to come out to lunch with me today?
I don’t have time. I have to go to my bank.
What do you have to do at your bank?
I have to see how much I have in my account so I can pay bills.
Why don’t you do that online, it will be much quicker.
I don’t know how to check my account online.
All you have to do is set up an account with your bank’s website.
Then I will be able to access my account on the internet?
Exactly, and you will not have to actually go to your bank.
I don’t think that it will be as secure online.
Everything that you do with your online banking account is just as secure as going to the bank.
But my bank closes early today and I have to be there before they close.
Online banking never closes and you can access your account 24 hours a day.
I was also going to check on my IRA account while I was at the bank today.
Online banking lets you check on any accounts you have at the bank, even IRA’s or CD’s.
I am going out of town this weekend and need to transfer funds from my savings account to my checking.
Online banking lets you access your account anywhere there is internet access.
So even if I am in a town that does not have my bank, I will still be able to transfer my funds?
Yes, there are many advantages to having an online banking account.
Well there must also be disadvantages.
There are a few. You may have to go to your bank to set up your online account.
And I will have to learn how to navigate the website.
It is also a good idea to print out any transactions as proof in case there is a problem with the website.
Well, I will call my bank and ask if I have to come in to set up my online account.
Good, and then you can come to lunch with me!
