Hello. Welcome to the Bank of Chicago. How can I help you?
Yes. I would like to open a bank account.
Okay. Would you like a savings account or a checking account?
I think a checking account if I can.
We can see if you qualify.
Okay. But first I’d like to know what is included with a checking account.
A checking account comes with a free checkbook and you can use your ATM card anywhere in the world.
What are your interest rates for checking accounts?
The checking account has a rate of 2.4%.
What about the savings account?
The savings account has 1.2% interest rate.
Are there any fees with either account?
No. There are no fees.
I would like to open a checking account then.
Okay. There is a $5000 minimum deposit.
Oh no. I only have $3000.
Then you will only be able to open a savings account.
Okay. I will do that then.
I believe you will be satisfied with a savings account.
Once I have more money can I change the account to a checking account?
Okay. That sounds good.
Okay. You will need to sign these papers.
Would you like to come out to lunch with me today?
I don’t have time. I have to go to my bank.
What do you have to do at your bank?
I have to see how much I have in my account so I can pay bills.
Why don’t you do that online, it will be much quicker.
I don’t know how to check my account online.
All you have to do is set up an account with your bank’s website.
Then I will be able to access my account on the internet?
Exactly, and you will not have to actually go to your bank.
I don’t think that it will be as secure online.
Everything that you do with your online banking account is just as secure as going to the bank.
But my bank closes early today and I have to be there before they close.
Online banking never closes and you can access your account 24 hours a day.
I was also going to check on my IRA account while I was at the bank today.
Online banking lets you check on any accounts you have at the bank, even IRA’s or CD’s.
I am going out of town this weekend and need to transfer funds from my savings account to my checking.
Online banking lets you access your account anywhere there is internet access.
So even if I am in a town that does not have my bank, I will still be able to transfer my funds?
Yes, there are many advantages to having an online banking account.
Well there must also be disadvantages.
There are a few. You may have to go to your bank to set up your online account.
And I will have to learn how to navigate the website.
It is also a good idea to print out any transactions as proof in case there is a problem with the website.
Well, I will call my bank and ask if I have to come in to set up my online account.
Good, and then you can come to lunch with me!
